Using Technician Interface Software
8-38
Using the prom Command
To upgrade the PROMs:
1. Insert a Flash card with sufficient contiguous free space to accommodate
the PROM images you are updating and the latest router image file.
To determine the amount of contiguous free space, display the directory of the
Flash card by entering the following command from the Technician Interface
prompt:
dir vol:
If you need more contiguous free space for the image:
Delete unnecessary or obsolete files.
Compact the contents of the Flash card.
2. Transfer the image files (for example, freboot.exe and frediag.exe) and the
latest boot image (for example, bn.exe) to the Flash card.
From the Technician Interface, use the
tftp command. (Refer to “In-Band File
Transfers” in Chapter 4 if you need more information.)
3. Establish a Technician Interface session with the router.
Enter the following at the Technician Interface
Login prompt:
Manager
Refer to Chapter 1 if you need more information on how to open a Technician
Interface session with the router.
Note: Before upgrading any router software, always save a copy of the
original configuration file and boot image as a safeguard, in case you
encounter problems during the procedure.
Note: The boot image naming convention differs between versions of Site
Manager. Versions 8.01 and earlier use the name boot.exe; Versions 8.10 and
later use a name specific to the router platform (for example, bn.exe for the
BCN and BLN). To change (downgrade or upgrade) the router boot image
between these versions, you must first rename the old image using the new
naming convention so it can be overwritten with the new image.
