How IGMP Relay Works
To an IGMP host on a directly attached network, the IGMP Relay device appears
to be an IP multicast router. The host receives a host membership query from the
IGMP Relay device and responds by sending an IGMP response. A host can also
send the IGMP Relay device an unsolicited join message.
To IGMP running on the IP multicast router, the IGMP Relay device appears to be
a locally attached host. IGMP on the IP multicast router sends IGMP host queries
to the IGMP Relay device. IGMP Relay responds by forwarding -- relaying --
IGMP host reports and unsolicited join messages from its attached hosts.
